Aboitiz, UP Mindanao Nurture Future Leaders Through Scholarship Program

Twelve promising students from the University of the Philippines Mindanao (UPMin) have become the newest recipients of the Aboitiz Future Leaders Scholarship (AFLS), a flagship program of the Aboitiz Foundation that aims to empower young Filipinos with the skills, values, and opportunities to lead positive change in their communities.

The scholarship program was formalized through a memorandum of agreement (MOA) signed on December 15 between the Aboitiz Foundation, Davao Light and Power Company (DLPC), and UP Mindanao. Representing Aboitiz were DLPC President and CEO Engr. Enriczar Tia and Aboitiz Foundation Impact Lead for Education Jowelle Ann Cruz, while UPMin Chancellor Prof. Lyre Anni Murao signed on behalf of the university.

Partnership For Education And Leadership

The partnership officially welcomes 12 new scholars from Mindanao under the AFLS program. Tia said the initiative reflects the Aboitiz Group’s long-standing commitment to education as a cornerstone for nation-building.

“The Aboitiz Future Leaders Scholarship Program continues its journey of empowering young minds, welcoming another batch of dedicated scholars from Mindanao,” Tia said. “Supporting education is not only about helping students finish school, but about shaping leaders who will positively impact their communities and the country’s future.”

Chancellor Murao commended the partnership for advancing educational excellence and opportunity in Mindanao, noting that the chosen students exemplify integrity, perseverance, and a desire to serve.

“When institutions come together to support students, we are not only helping individuals — we are helping shape communities and the future of Mindanao,” she said.

Empowering Scholars Beyond Financial Aid

Established in 2000, the AFLS program goes beyond providing financial assistance. Each scholar receives a ₱10,000 monthly allowance until graduation, provided they maintain a general weighted average of at least 85 percent with no failing or incomplete grades.

Beyond monetary aid, the program offers scholars mentorship from industry professionals, leadership training, and real-world learning opportunities within the Aboitiz Group. Students are also eligible for paid internships and potential employment upon graduation, ensuring a smooth transition from the academic to the professional world.

For UP Mindanao, the scholarship prioritizes students in BS Data Science and BS Computer Science, reflecting Aboitiz’s forward-looking approach to building a tech-enabled workforce for the country’s digital future.

Building A Generation Of Leaders

Over the past two decades, the Aboitiz Future Leaders Scholarship has supported more than a hundred scholars across the University of the Philippines system and other partner schools nationwide. The program aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4, which advocates for inclusive and equitable quality education and lifelong learning opportunities.

Through continuous collaboration with universities and local communities, Aboitiz aims to develop young leaders who combine technical expertise with empathy, innovation, and social responsibility.
