The Department of Transportation (DOTr) is considering building the first-ever railway in Mindanao as an electric train. This was disclosed by DOTr Secretary Jaime Bautista to reporters during the recent Asia Infrastructure Forum.
As the first railway on the island, the Mindanao Railway Project is envisioned to link Tagum, Davao del Norte to Digos City, Davao del Sur. Initially, the project involved the construction of a diesel-powered train. But the DOTr has reconsidered due to the national government’s push for the adoption of electric vehicles.
For the pre-feasibility study of Mindanao Railway Phase 3, the DOTr has tapped Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu India LLP and ASA Law. Phase 3 of the railway has a length of 54.8 kilometers starting from the Laguindingan Airport and traversing cities and towns across Northern Mindanao.
Minimizing greenhouse gas emissions
The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has reported that the transportation sector is a major contributor to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Road transportation specifically contributes 80% of the total GHG emissions of the sector. Increased GHG emissions trap the sun’s heat causing global warming and climate change.
For this reason, electric vehicles are seen as a more sustainable option for transportation.
Bringing economic development across the region
According to Transportation Assistant Secretary Jorjette Aquino, mobility projects generate job opportunities and speed up economic growth. Thus, the Mindanao Railway Project is a major step towards the development of the region.
The railway will provide passenger and cargo services and will be linked to key ports to boost trade.
