AboitizPower Unit Inks Emergency Power Deal With Misamis Occidental Co-Op

Aboitiz Power Corp., through its subsidiary Therma South Inc. (TSI), has signed a 2-megawatt emergency power supply agreement (EPSA) with Misamis Occidental I Electric Cooperative Inc. (MOELCI-I) as part of efforts to secure a stable electricity supply in parts of Northern Mindanao amid rising energy demand.

The agreement will provide emergency power support to consumers in Oroquieta City and the municipalities of Aloran, Lopez Jaena, Plaridel, Calamba, Baliangao, Sapang Dalaga, and Concepcion in Misamis Occidental.

In separate statements, both companies described the deal as a milestone partnership aimed at ensuring uninterrupted electricity service for communities served by the electric cooperative.

First Emergency Supply Deal

TSI, which operates a 300-megawatt coal-fired power plant located between Davao City and Sta. Cruz in Davao del Sur, said the agreement marks the company’s first emergency power supply arrangement with an electric cooperative.

AboitizPower Head of Revenue Operations James Yu said the deal reflects the company’s continuing commitment to support distribution utilities and cooperatives during critical supply situations.

“At TSI and AboitizPower, we don’t just provide power — we stand by our partners in every situation, including the critical moments when they need us most,” Yu said.

He added that the agreement further strengthens the long-standing partnership between TSI and MOELCI-I, which has worked with the Aboitiz-led firm for more than a decade.

MOELCI-I General Manager Guilvin Medina said the cooperative’s relationship with AboitizPower has been anchored on reliability and trust over the years.

“This EPSA is a reflection of that. For over ten years, TSI has been a steadfast partner in keeping the lights on for our customers, and we are proud that this agreement makes history as the first of its kind,” Medina said.

The cooperative also noted that the emergency arrangement is expected to help stabilize electricity supply across its franchise area, particularly during periods of supply constraints or unexpected disruptions.

Expanding Mindanao Presence

TSI currently supplies electricity to more than 20 electric cooperatives and distribution utilities across Mindanao, including service areas in Davao, Cagayan de Oro, General Santos, Butuan, Zamboanga, Cotabato, Tagum, Kidapawan, Agusan, Surigao, Sarangani, Sultan Kudarat, Bukidnon, and Misamis Oriental.

The latest agreement reinforces AboitizPower’s position as one of the major energy providers in Mindanao, where demand for reliable power continues to increase alongside economic activity and population growth.

AboitizPower has businesses spanning power generation, distribution, retail electricity services, and distributed energy solutions. Its generation portfolio includes both renewable and nonrenewable facilities as the company pursues what it described as a balanced energy mix.

The firm earlier said it aims to expand its renewable energy portfolio by 2030 while continuing to support the country’s baseload and peak power requirements.

Strong First Quarter

The company also started the year with strong financial results, posting a 71-percent increase in net income to ₱7.9 billion in the first quarter.

AboitizPower attributed the earnings growth mainly to higher contracted capacities and improved availability of its coal-fired power plants under its generation business segment.

The company likewise recently energized several solar projects, including the 221-megawatt-peak Olongapo solar farm, the 47-MW peak Armenia solar facility, and the 93-MW peak San Manuel solar plant.

Industry observers said the company’s continued investments in both conventional and renewable energy projects reflect broader efforts by power firms to maintain supply reliability while supporting the country’s energy transition goals.

The new emergency supply agreement with MOELCI-I comes as electric cooperatives across the country seek more flexible arrangements to address supply shortages and maintain stable electricity service for consumers.
