Nippon Sanso Ingasco Group (NSIG), a subsidiary of Japanese industrial gas firm Nippon Sanso Holdings, has partnered with First Gen Corporation (First Gen) to power its manufacturing facility in Tagoloan, Misamis Oriental, entirely with renewable energy.

Under the agreement signed in early April, First Gen’s subsidiary, Energy Development Corporation (EDC), will deliver 2.6 megawatts (MW) of geothermal energy from its Mindanao Geothermal Power Plant in North Cotabato. The renewable power will support NSIG’s operations within the Phividec Industrial Estate, one of Mindanao’s major industrial zones.

NSIG, a fully owned subsidiary of Japan’s Nippon Sanso Holdings Group, manufactures and supplies liquid and compressed industrial gases used across various industries, including electronics, food and beverage, and steel. The company specializes in producing and distributing gases such as nitrogen, oxygen, argon, hydrogen, and other specialty gases.

“As part of the Nippon Sanso Holdings Group’s global commitment to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050, we are continuously working to minimize our environmental impact,” said NSIG President Takenori Kawachino.

“This milestone in Tagoloan highlights our resolve to embrace renewable energy and promote sustainable solutions across our global operations,” Kawachino continued.

The agreement is facilitated through the Retail Competition and Open Access (RCOA) mechanism, a provision under the Electric Power Industry Reform Act (EPIRA) of 2001, which allows large electricity consumers to select their preferred power supplier.

“Transitioning to direct RE supply under RCOA has its challenges, but the benefits far outweigh them,” said First Gen Chief Engagement Officer Carlo Vega. “We’re proud to help NSIG reach its decarbonization goals through stable RE supply and energy efficiency solutions.”

First Gen currently operates a total of 3,668 MW of installed capacity from its diverse portfolio, which includes geothermal, wind, hydro, solar, and natural gas power plants.
