To affect real change in environmental conservation, a multisectoral approach is required. Government and non-government organizations must work hand-in-hand along with the private sector in initiating efforts and mobilizing stakeholders into preserving our natural resources.
In Davao, environmental conservation efforts have been given a much-needed jolt thanks to Hedcor, the renewable energy asset manager of AboitizPower. With the help of over 100 partners and stakeholders, Hedcor has initiated three major conservation projects in Davao City and Santa Cruz, Davao del Sur.
Promoting Ecological Balance
One of them involved planting more than 250 bamboo propagules and narra seedlings in Barangay Mintal, Davao City, and Sitio Pogpog, Sibulan, Santa Cruz, Davao del Sur. Hedcor said that the project aims to advance and promote ecological balance and sustainable livelihoods in local communities.
Hedcor employees also led a river clean-up along the Talomo River, removing over 100 kilograms of waste, showcasing their deep commitment to environmental preservation, extending beyond mere planting efforts.
Jay Kabamalan, Assistant Vice President for Safety, Health, Environmental and Security, said that Hedcor champions environmental stewardship in safeguarding our planet for the benefit of future generations. “As a group, we engage in practices such as tree planting, river clean-up, and non-use of PET bottles, because when collectively done, it creates a sustainable living for all,” he said.
Green Collaboration
In another project, Hedcor collaborated with the Ecological Conservation and Humanitarian Organization (ECHO) Cares, a non-profit environmental group, and Barangay Astorga in Santa Cruz, Davao del Sur, to plant over 1,500 mangrove trees in Sitio Bacutan on Earth Day. This area, a declared wildlife sanctuary frequented by various sea turtle species, is central to Hedcor’s conservation initiatives.
Hedcor’s Environmental team, along with various IP community partners, will closely monitor all planted trees to ensure their sustainability. Regular assessments by the City and Municipal Environment and Natural Resources offices will further enhance the survival rate of these critical green assets.
Hedcor continues to pursue innovative solutions to reduce its ecological footprint. Through these initiatives, Hedcor aims to raise awareness about environmental conservation and inspire active participation in protecting our natural resources.
