Government Welcomes Key Investment In Safe Nuclear Energy

Recent advancements in nuclear technology have significantly improved the safety of nuclear energy. As such, the Philippines is starting to make waves in embracing nuclear energy as a cleaner alternative to fossil fuels with the entry of Ultra Safe Nuclear Corporation (USNC), which vows to develop Micro Modular Reactors (MMR) in the country.

President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. and Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Secretary Fred Pascual welcomed USNC and its landmark investment here in the Philippines. “As we aim to enhance our industrial development strategy, having sufficient, stable, and secure energy is vital for supporting strategic industries we plan to establish in the Philippines,” Secretary Pascual said.

More Sustainable Energy Source

Harnessing nuclear energy produces less greenhouse gas emissions compared to fossil fuels, making it a cleaner and more sustainable energy source. Safety concerns associated with nuclear energy is also becoming a thing of the past, as technological advancements have made it safer in recent years, including innovations in reactor design, safety systems, and waste management.

USNC is a global leader in nuclear technologies and services, both on Earth and in space. As a vertical integrator, they have several major initiatives. These include the Micro Modular Reactor (MMR®), Fully Ceramic Micro-encapsulated (FCM®) nuclear fuel, and nuclear power and propulsion technologies for space exploration.

Their MMR technology is a cutting-edge 4th-generation nuclear energy system that provides safe, zero-carbon, and cost-effective electricity and heat to utilities, industries, and remote communities.

A Glimpse Of Things To Come

President Marcos, Jr. and Secretary Pascual see the potential of MMRs in making a huge impact on the country’s sustainable development and energy security. They see USNC’s investment as a key solution to addressing the energy chain gaps in the country, while also enhancing value-added activities.

The Philippine delegation’s fruitful meeting with USNC is a continuation of an ongoing dialogue that began at Blair House on May 2, 2023 and builds on Ultra Safe’s participation in the recent U.S. Presidential Trade and Investment Mission on March 11, 2024.
